Review of The Birthday Girl by Melissa de la Cruz

The Birthday Girl is an adult fiction book, centered around a mysterious woman's 40th birthday celebration.  Ellie de Florent-Stinson has everything she could possibly want, a handsome husband, an accomplished, college age stepdaughter, a beautiful 10 year old girl and two rambunctious six-year old boys.  She has a beautiful new home in Palm Springs, which just happens to be the venue of her 40th birthday party.  Ellie also has a glamorous circle of friends, and she is a thriving designer of casual women's wear.  But, everything isn't as perfect as it seems, Ellie is keeping many secrets.  Will Ellie get through the night before all her secrets are revealed?  Or, will she lose everything she loves so dearly when the truth comes out?

The Birthday Girl was the first book I have read by Melissa de la Cruz.  The story has twists and turns that you definitely don't see coming until the very end.  The story is well written and has an intriguing theme  The feature character is a bit hard to like but you can't help but read on to find out what's going to happen.

Overall I liked the book, though at first I had a hard time getting into it.  Once I did though it was definitely worth the read.

Rating for The Birthday Girl 4 stars
